Urban Health for the Disadvantaged

Project period: December 2018 to November 2020

Kankeshwori, Kathmandu

PHASE Nepal will be implementing a two-year Urban Health project for particularly disadvantaged people with a focus on maternal and child health and additional measures to support people living with a disability. The project will support a government Urban Health Clinic in a district of Kathmandu with inadequate health provision and a high concentration of “urban poor” by providing two additional staff members as well as medication and other supplies in order to ensure the local population’s access to health care.

In cooperation with the local self-help organization Independent Living Center, which advocates for an improved living situation of people living with a disability in Nepal, we aim to identify 50-100 people with (mental or physical) disabilities in the Clinic’s catchment area, i.e. approximately 10 % of the estimated number of people living with disabilities among the poorest in the catchment area. Our goal is to ensure their access to primary health care, e.g. through outreach work, and to support them in claiming their rights and accessing and utilizing existing (government) offers or facilitating their access to additional support (technical aids, grants, …), and thus to ensure their greatest possible inclusion and participation in society. We are planning to identify this target group through existing institutions (e.g. FCHVs, Independent Living Center, local government representatives and charities/NGOs), as well as targeted activities (case finding).

The project is planned as a pilot project, in particular regarding the cooperation of different partners who will be able to bring their respective strengths to the project: PHASE Nepal has long-standing experience in improving health care in disadvantaged communities and populations in rural Nepal, while the Independent Living Center provides the expertise in counselling and supporting people living with disabilities in Nepal.

The goals of the project bear on SDG 3, health and wellbeing (in particular 3.1, 3.2 and 3.7, 3.8), as well as SDG 10, reduce inequality (to empower all people independent of their age, gender, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status and promote their social, economic, and political inclusion).

We would like to thank the City of Vienna for its support of this project!
